William Rosser Campbell

March 13, 1924 — August 8, 2020

William Rosser Campbell 96, of Sanford passed away at Parkview Retirement Home on August 8, 2020. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Campbell was born in Lee County on March 13, 1924 to the late Joseph Edwin Campbell and Fannie Rosser Campbell. He is preceded in death by a son Barron Campbell and a granddaughter Crystal Diane Campbell.

Mr. Campbell joined the US Army during World War II, serving in the 847th Ordinance Division. He toured in Germany and France. He was extremely proud of his time in the service which led to his deep patriotism. He loved sharing stories of his military service and could frequently be seen around Sanford proudly wearing his red white and blue attire. Upon his return to Lee County, he had a successful long-term career with Metro Products of Atlanta GA until he retired at age 53.

Mr. Campbell shared a wonderful love story with his wife Grace. They were married for 73 years and rarely seen apart from each other. Their love and devotion to one another was transcendent. The staff at Parkview frequently relayed sweet stories of his adoration and continued care for Grace. He would often play his guitar and sing to her. He loved Big Band music and they loved dancing together. They also enjoyed traveling and spending time at Cherry Grove Beach, Emerald Isle and Seven Lakes.

Randy, Robby, Barron and Gayemell are grateful to their father for his devotion to family. He always exemplified great integrity, strong work ethic, and a grand sense of humor.

Rosser Campbell is survived by his wife Grace Hardy Campbell; sons Randy Campbell (Patricia) of Emerald Isle and Robby Campbell (Colleen) of Sanford; daughter Gayemell Shepherd (Dale) of Seven Lakes; grandchildren Kymberly Campbell Eckard, Christopher Randell Campbell, Chan Campbell, Joey Campbell, Lin Campbell, Ashlyn Tilley, Rosser Tilley, Talmadge Shepherd and Logan Saponaro; six great grandchildren and a sister Rhumell Ross of Raleigh.
