Sarah "Sally" Patterson

Sarah (Sally) Wicker Patterson, 91, died August 22, 2016 at home with family. She was born in Cameron, N.C. on May 10, 1925 to Walter Malcom Wicker and Mary Lee Ritter Wicker.

Graveside services for family and friends will be held at Buffalo Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, August 28th at 1:00, followed by a celebration of life at First Baptist Church of Sanford, N.C. at 2:00.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Orus (Pat) Fuquay Patterson, Jr, brothers Carlton Elbert Wicker and Walter Vernon Wicker. She is survived by her brother Paul Julian Wicker (Jo Ann), sons Orus Fuquay Patterson III (Sara), Marquis Wicker Patterson, Joel Brent Patterson (Kim), and daughter Mary Patterson Brinker (Bill), thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

Sally was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club, Picwic Book Club, Questers and Fideles Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church in Sanford, N.C. She served on the flower committee and grounds committee as well as taught boy scouts, girl scouts and brownie scouts for many years.

Her love of gardening was her and Pat’s passion. She and Pat opened their garden to the public on Mother’s Day weekend for 14 consecutive years. She was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

The detail in which her memory could recall her past allowed her to weave stories that are unsurpassed. These stories may very well be what we cherish most.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sandhills Community College (910)695-3712 or JC Raulston Arboretum (919)513-0637. Throughout the years Sally and Pat loved and supported the gardening programs these organizations provide.

First let me apologize for not knowing that your beautiful mom had passed. I met Sally and O.F. Patterson more than 26 years ago, whilst I was working at then my part time employers John & Gail Foushee, Big Bloomers Flower Farm. I fell in love with your parents because they helped to fill a gap of mine (my grandparents). I followed your mom and dad around at the greenhouse when they came out just to spend time with them. I took my mother who I lost two years ago to see Sally and O.F's gardens on Mothers Day year after year. I loved your mother very much and found out from Gail that she had passed away. I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am, but to know that their work grows on in their passion for gardening in me. I was inspired 26 years ago to start my own garden and I work in it in some way everyday and every chance I get. Though I didn't know her children physically very well I knew you from all of the stories she told me. God Bless you all. I very sorry for the loss but know that she was a remarkable person and friend to me. It will be hard to know that I won't see Ms. Sally this spring. Kindest Regards, Ernest.

Hey guys, sorry to hear about your mom. I was thinking back and remembered the times our families used to visit. I was always made to feel right at home. Your mom will be missed, but with the good memories we all have, she will be alive in our hearts. Love you guys !

So sorry to hear of your loss. She was such a lovely lady. We have happy memories of going to tour your folks' gorgeous gardens on Mother's Days and getting in a visit with them. They were so generous to share that beauty with the community.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

What fond memories I have of going out to Sally and O.F.'s wonderful home and grounds in my early youth. I remember both Pat and Sally as devilishly humorous, witty, loving and giving. Over the years, I lost touch with a lot of the Sanford folks who populated my young boy's memory, but the very mention of Sally and Pat still generates great joy for me. Brenda and I wish all of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the very best. We know that you willalive the spirit of these two amazing people.

Always looked forward to visiting their garden on Mother's Day. So many special things to see, I took many photos there and spoke with Mrs. Patterson almost every time I was there. Always went there with my Mom, my sister, and my granddaughter. Precious memories.
