Roy M. "Sam" Spivey

Roy M. “Sam” Spivey, 83 of Sanford passed away Sunday March 12, 2017.

Mr. Spivey was born in Sanford on May 26, 1933 to the late Benjamin W. and Annie Love Spivey.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Stone Spivey; sons, Samuel Mark Spivey of Apex, and Malcolm Grant Spivey and wife Mandy of Sanford; granddaughter, Ava Hayes and husband Mark of Sanford and great grandchildren Rider Hearn and Sailor Hayes; sisters in laws Helen Martindale and husband Wayne, and Dr. Karen Gulledge; good friend, Dr. George Grant.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Spivey, Kathleen Martindale, Ruby Griffin, Mary Brown, and Elizabeth King; brothers, Bill and Jack Spivey; brother in law, Lee Gulledge Jr.

Sam graduated from Sanford Central High School where he lettered in football and basketball and also graduated from King Business College. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and received the Good Conduct Award. He retired from the US Postal Service after 33 years of service.

Sam was a faithful member of the Jonesboro United Methodist Church where he serves as Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and on numerous committees. He was an active member of the community, charter member of the Jonesboro Rotary Club, the NARF Group, the VFW and the American Legion.

Sam was a sports enthusiast. He served as Bat Boy for the American Spinners and was a loyal Tar Heel Fan.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Tuesday at Jonesboro United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the Wesley Center following the service. Burial will follow at Shallow Well Cemetery.
