Robert Trent Burkey

Robert Trent Burkey age 59, passed away unexpectedly on July 16, 2025 at his home.

He was born a son of Robert & Lousie Burkey. He grew up in Sanford and graduated from Lee County High School. After graduating he enlisted in the Air Force and served 3 years in the Philippine Islands. After his discharge from the Air Force, he attended Appalachian State University, then received his PhD degree from Texas A & M University.

He had a varied career, from teaching at Emory and Henry College in Virgina and working in research and development at Alcon Laboratories in Fort Woth, Tx. He was a self-described “doer of many things.”

He is survived by his wife of only 7 weeks, Pilar Sauza, his mother, Louise D. Burkey, son Austin Burkey, brother Dr. Mark Burkey (Angela) and nephew Pierce Burkey.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.
