Philip Chaffin Yarborough, Jr. passed away December 29, 2018, at home. He was born in Lee County on November 3, 1927, to the late Philip Chaffin Yarborough, Sr. and Wilma Crystal Hartness. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Mary Y. Bridgers, a brother, Rufus Melvin Yarborough, a sister-in-law, Mary Thornton Yarborough, his stepmother, Edna Earl Yarborough, and a niece, Amy Bridgers Wilkins.
A lifelong resident of Lee County, Phil was a graduate of Sanford High School, where he played football and was presented the Kiwanis citizenship award. He attended N. C. State University. After the death of his father, he helped manage Fairview Dairy, the family business.
Phil served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following his service, he returned to Fairview Dairy where he worked until it was sold in 1961. At that time, he started a refrigeration, air conditioning, and contracting business which continued as Yarborough Refrigeration for over 40 years.
Phil was a former member of the Sanford Lions Club and the Sanford Elks Lodge. He served as Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 941. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and served there as a deacon.
Phil is survived by his wife, Angelette “Angie” Oldham Yarborough, whom he married July 7, 1956; two sons, Phil Yarborough, III (Helen) of Sanford, and David Yarborough (Sherry) of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Vann Yarborough (Katherine) of Mebane, Ryan Yarborough of Sanford, Hayley Yarborough of Raleigh, and Noah Yarborough of Raleigh; a step grandson, Justin Bridges of Charlotte; four great-grandchildren, Clark, Bruce, Daniel, and Emma; a brother, Carol Yarborough (Ann) of Sanford; two sisters, Wilma “Billie” Y. Berryhill (Jim) of Charlotte, and Janet Y. Kelly (Glenn) of Asheville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Following a private graveside service at Buffalo Cemetery, a memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 2, at 2pm. Dr. Matt Garrett and Dr. William Leathers will conduct the service. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
