Paul Laster Wicker Jr. passed away peacefully into God’s loving arms on November 16, 2021, at the age of 102. He was a devoted son and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend to many.
He was the son of Paul Laster Wicker Sr. and Mallie Burns Wicker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Gunter Wicker and brothers, James “Preston” Wicker and Raymond “Palmer” Wicker. He is survived by his daughter, Helen Wicker and son, Charles Wicker (Tzena). He is also survived by his grandson Duke Wicker and granddaughter Lauren (Paul) Hoben and great-granddaughters, Isabel and Annabell Melton and Abby and Austin Hoben.
Paul was an active and founding member of Emmanuel Congregational Church in Sanford, NC throughout his entire life. Paul, a devout Christian, lived a life of integrity, honor and service.
Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Paul honorably served as First Lieutenant Quartermaster Corps in the Army of the United States during WW11 from 1943-1946. Like so many of the “Greatest Generation”, Paul’s life would be shaped by the experience of leaving his hometown of Sanford, North Carolina and serving his country in faraway places such as Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, and Iran.
Paul leaves a legacy of love, kindness, and a generosity of spirit. He always gave a listening ear, loving smile and laugh for all that knew him but especially for those that knew him as “Granddaddy” and “Uncle Paul”. And for this, he was much loved.
A special thanks and deep appreciation to his caregivers Erica Smith, Rosezetta Manuel, Linda Humphrey, Tiwana Lightbrown, Debbie Ivey and Vanessa Adams for the love and care they gave during the last year of his life.
