Mahala Hawkins Howington, Jr.

Mahala Hawkins Howington, Jr., known as Sonny/Junior Howington, passed September 3, 2017 at Sanford Health and Rehab. God took him in his sleep and he has arrived in heaven with many loved ones waiting on him. Oh what a celebration he is having now.

Funeral services will be held 2pm Wednesday at Rogers Pickard Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Turner’s Chapel Church Cemetery.

Sonny was born on January 1, 1934 and was the only child to the late M. Hawkins Howington and Nancy Allen Howington. Sonny was married to his one and only love, Ruby Morrison Howington until her death.

He worked at Lee Brick in the Northview area for 46 years. Sonny loved to hunt, fish and watch the Braves play baseball.

He is survived by two sons, Johnny Mahala Howington (Brenda) and Jimmy Howington both of Sanford; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby, sons Leroy Gillis and Sammy Gillis.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00pm Wednesday prior to the funeral service.
