Larry Britt McRae

Larry Britt McRae age 78, peacefully passed away Thursday February 4, 2021. Larry was born January 13, 1943 to Britt and Mary Christine Powell McRae of Anderson Creek, N.C.

Larry attended and graduated from Sanford Central High in 1961 and was active in football, track and basketball.  He was nominated to be a Morehead Scholar and served as Student Body President.  While playing football Larry obtained his nickname “Twinkle Toes or “Twink “for short.  His classmates deemed him fast on his toes.  That nickname followed him throughout his life.  After graduating Sanford Central, Larry met the love of his life, Sue Kelly at Morton’s Drive Inn, Sanford, in 1964. It was love at first sight.  They were married in 1965 and remained married for 55 years.  In 1971 their son, Brian Landry McRae was born.

Larry’s employment began at Roberts Company and then in 1966 he would join Steel and Pipe Corporation, where he remained for 47 years, became President and upon retirement was Chairman.  Larry was a former President of Rotary, Governor of the Moose Lodge, and a member of the Sanford Elks Lodge.  On weekends you could catch Larry playing a round of golf with his buddies or high up in a deer stand.  Larry loved nature and everything about it.  He enjoyed long walks in the woods and a hobby of collecting arrowheads, in which gathered many during his walks.  He enjoyed sharing his love and knowledge of nature with others, especially his wife Sue, son Brian and two grandchildren Morgan and Landry.

To Morgan and Landry he was known as Paw Paw.  Paw Paw loved them with all his heart.  He was certainly a proud grandpa.  Larry was preceded in death by his father, Britt McRae, mother/ Mary Christine Powell McRae and Brother Donald Chris McRae.

He is survived by wife/ Sue Kelly McRae; Son/ Brian Landry McRae (Christa); granddaughter Morgan McRae; grandson Landry McRae; sister/ Phebe McRae Eason; brother in law Ronnie Kelly; sister in law / Vivian McRae, and many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to a wonderful caregiver, Nancy Siler (Ms. Nancy) Mr Warewee loved you.

Larry was such a fine man. I cannot remember a time in the fifty plus years I have known him that he didnt greet us with that trademark warm smile. I hope hes golfing in heaven with his buddies, laughing and no pain or worries. He was surely loved and blessed with an adoring family and a multitude of friends. We were honored to be in that group. .

Sue , Brian and family,
I am so very sorry to learn of Larry's passing. I enjoyed working with him during the Ole Gilliam Mill crankups and the meetings for the mill. He had a great personality and was very business minded. He was also very generous when it came to helping if there was a need at the mill, Worth Pickard knew he could depend on Larry.
I'm sorry that I didn't visit with him more but my wife and I prayed for him often
My wife and I offer our sincere condolences to you.
