Joan Wagoner

Joan Johnson Wagoner peacefully passed away November 24, 2023 at Central Carolina Hospital. The service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Sanford on Monday, November 27th at 11 am.

Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband William Eugene Wagoner, her three brothers Gene, Phil and Paul and her parents Fred and Adelyne Johnson.  She is survived by her daughter Lisa Foushee (Ken) of Sanford, NC and son William “Bill” Wagoner Jr (Rhonda) of Loganville, GA, four grandchildren Kevin Foushee, Jennifer Foushee Conde, Kristen Wagoner, and Ryan Wagoner (Erica), five great grandchildren and her dog Fisher.

Joan was born and raised in Raeford, North Carolina.  She attended Peace College and UNC-G and moved to Sanford after marrying her beloved William where she has remained since 1951.  Most people know Joan as “Mrs. Wagoner” who taught Spanish at Lee County High School for many years.  She was a passionate and vibrant teacher and her students loved her as much as she loved them.

After retirement Joan began taking art lessons and quickly realized that she had a newfound passion and talent.  She spent much of her free time culminating this talent.  She joined the local Brush and Pallet Club and was named Artist of the Year in 2013.

First Presbyterian Church was a second home to Joan where she served on many committees, taught Sunday School, and led Bible studies.  She was a humble servant of the Lord.

Until Joan’s last days she remained vibrant and charismatic and truly lived life to its fullest.  Joan was a lover of humans and animals alike and always had a four-legged best friend by her side.  She was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  She was a true southern lady and her spirit and love for life were both contagious and inspiring.  Joan will truly be missed on this earth but peacefully exited, excited to meet her Lord and loved ones who have passed before her.
