James Hugh Lehmann

James Hugh Lehmann, 88, left his family for his heavenly home on May 20, 2020. Jim passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

Jim was born May 27, 1931 in Los Angeles, California to Hugh and Margaret Lehmann. Jim served his nation in the National Guard of New York from 1947 to 1951. His patriotism and love for the U.S. military continued throughout his lifetime. He completed his undergraduate education at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then graduated from the UNC School of Dentistry in 1958. Jim moved to Sanford, NC to raise his family and practice dentistry. He joyfully served the Sanford community as a family dentist for 50 years. Jim was known for his quiet and thoughtful demeanor, offering wisdom and stories of his past to his children and grandchildren. He had a keen eye with antiques and was frequently found reading historical novels while listening to Doris Day albums. Jim was always happiest while working in his yard and spending time with his family.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his adoring wife of 59 years, Nancy (Harrelson); two daughters, Lynne Hattaway (Michael) and Susan Hincks (Tom); and seven grandchildren, Clarke, Dare, Alex, Taylor, Madison, James, and Isabelle.

A private celebration of life will be held at St. Luke United Methodist Church at a later time. Contributions can be made to the Salvation Army of Lee County at 507 N. Steele Street, Sanford, NC 27330 or the First Baptist Love Class at 202 Summit Drive, Sanford, NC 27330.
