Ilene DeSpain

Ilene Marie DeSpain, a devoted servant of God, faithful wife, and loving mother, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 12, 2026, at the age of 79. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of Sanford, North Carolina.

Born on July 3, 1947, in Laurel, Nebraska, Ilene was the cherished daughter of Emil and Hannah Carlson. Her life’s ultimate goal was to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever, a purpose that shone brightly through her decades of quiet, impactful service as a stay-at-home mother and dedicated homemaker.

Ilene was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church in Sanford, NC. She found joy in serving the local church community, particularly through teaching, mentoring, and discipling women in their faith. Her legacy of spiritual devotion, kindness, and unwavering support will live on in the countless lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Hannah Carlson; her beloved husband, JD DeSpain Jr.; her sister, Caroline Reed; and her brother, Steve Carlson.

Ilene’s memory will be forever cherished by her surviving family: her brother, Phil Carlson, and her three sons, daughters-in-law, and ten grandchildren:

• JD DeSpain III and his wife, Sarah DeSpain of Sanford, NC, and their children: Hannah and Emma DeSpain
• Jonathan DeSpain and his wife, Jill DeSpain of Valencia, CA, and their children: Carson, Lucas, Titus, and Lincoln DeSpain
• Craig DeSpain and his wife, Carla DeSpain of Valencia, CA, and their children: Ann, Allison, Jack, and Stella DeSpain

She also leaves behind a host of extended family members, church family, and dear friends who were blessed by her grace and love.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either to Cool Springs Baptist Church, 1313 Cool Springs Baptist Church Road, Sanford, NC 27330, in advances for youth and children’s.
