Ernest Jefferson "E.J." Layne

Ernest Jefferson “E.J” Layne Jr., 81, of Sanford passed away on Thursday February 10, 2022. Graveside services will be held on Sunday February 13, 2022, at 2pm at Buffalo Cemetery.

Mr. Layne was born in Lee Co. to the late Ernest Jefferson Sr. and Rosa Mae Griffith. He was a dedicated member of Shepherd’s Flock Baptist Church. He managed A&P grocery stores for several years after which he ran Cooper’s Grocery for 29 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Peggy Gaynell Layne; son Scott Layne; and sisters Helen Cooper and Rachel Layne.

He is survived by his daughter Rhonda L. Puckett (Jeff); brother Eddie Layne (Janis); sister Bobbie Jean Christenberry (Bill); grand children Tim Layne, Ashton Glynn, Maddie Puckett, Kara Puckett, and Katie Puckett; and great grandchildren McKenley Layne and Tripp Layne.

The family would like to thank UNC Hospice House and the staff of Pittsboro; special hospice nurse Pat Lynch; and special caregivers Annie Patterson, Gloria Jones, Jen Scott, Joyce Key, and Vanessa Parsons.
