Dwight Monroe Marsh, 92 of Sanford passed away Wednesday March 11, 2026. Funeral services will be held at 2:30pm at Cameron Baptist Church on Sunday March 15, 2025. He will lie in state starting at 2pm before the service.
Mr. Marsh was born in Moore Co., the son of the late Oscar Dillard Marsh and Mamie Lee Matthews Marsh. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, of nearly 70 years, Alsie “Jean” Comer Marsh; and siblings Alec Marsh, Phillip “Pete” Marsh, Audrey Marsh McPherson.
Dwight remembers working in tobacco and doing several odd jobs while growing up. He joined the Army in 1951. He took parachute training at Ft Bragg but backed out before jumping out of a plane. He later joined the Army’s entertainment department as a boxer. He was stationed around Bad Nauheim, Budingen, and Friedburg, Germany. He returned to the USA after three years, landing in the Washington, DC area. He was SO homesick that he took a taxi all the way back to Cameron.
February 3, 1956 he married Jean Comer and moved to Sanford, NC. They had two children, Rhonda and Tim. While employed with a golf cart company he was involved in an auto accident which broke his neck in SC. He was hospitalized and kept in traction for months, being paralyzed until the swelling went down. After a very long recovery time he and his family lived in North Myrtle Beach for a summer.
A previous neighbor in Colorado invited Dwight and family to come for a visit. They returned with a beautiful horse, Babe’s Delight. It was the beginning of his real story, the love of horses.
He and Jean bought a farm, built a house and barn and started collecting horses, participating in horse shows, breeding, racing, boarding, and teaching riding lessons at Marsh Stables. Tim and his wife Michelle have now taken over that business.
Dwight and a young Tim also delved into dirt bike activities. He taught Tim about horses and construction and mechanics.
Last but not least, he loved telling stories, telling jokes and making people laugh. That part will really be missed.
Mr. Marsh is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Marsh Lee (Michael); son Timothy Marsh (Michelle); grandchildren, Patrick Lee, Ryan Lee, and Shane Marsh; step grandchildren, Stephanie Lane, Nicole Calise, and Lathan Lane; one step great grandchild, Atlas Lane.
Memorial contributions can be made to Cameron Baptist Church, 593 Carthage Street., Cameron, NC 28326.
