Doris McManus Maynard Cox, 95 Sanford, passed away Monday June 3, 2024.
Born in Scotland County on August 25, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Lee R. McManus and Carrie Thompson McManus. Her first husband, Charles E. Maynard, a son, Charles Lynn Maynard her second husband, Albert Leslie Cox, daughter Anne Maynard Hurley, two sisters Evelyn McManus Raby of Hamlet and Franklin and Mabel
McManus Privette of Jacksonville, FL predeceased her.
Mrs. Cox graduated from Sanford High School in 1946. She was an active member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church, Circle #2, the Wesley Bible Sunday School Class and served on various committees. She was a member of a birthday club and a bridge club. She was on the Lee County Committee of the North Carolina Museum of History. She was a former member of the Jonesboro Book Guild, member of the Brownstone Home and Garden Club and a life member of Carolina Trace Country Club and years before the Sanford Junior Woman’s Club. When her children were young, Mrs. Cox served as a Girl Scout Leader and a Boy Scout Den Mother.
She was a true Christian devoted to her church, family, and friends with a servant’s heart that she demonstrated with loving kindnesses especially with her cooking that she loved sharing. As much as she was blessed with her family and her church family, who she cherished and loved, she had many friends with who shared so much happiness. We all were so much more blessed to have had her in our lives.
Mrs. Cox is survived by her children Claudia Maynard Key and husband Ted, Albert Leslie Cox, Jr., wife Joyce and William Alexander Cox, and wife Rita all of Sanford. Grandchildren: Abraham Cox and wife Christy of Greensboro, Christopher Key of Sanford, Ashley Cox of Wilmington, Stacey Cox Teel and husband Ashley of Wake Forest, Nicholas Cox and wife Laura of Raleigh, Priscilla Cox Weaver and husband Travis of Fuquay Varina and Adam Hurley and wife Ashley of Sanford. Great-grandchildren, Corbett and Chase Key, Preston Teel, Emily, Jacob, and Lucas Cox, Camille Cox, Haley Weaver and Trevor Hurley. Mrs. Cox is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday June 7th, 2024, at 11am at St. Luke United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends starting at 10:30am prior to the service in the Ladies’ Parlor at Saint Luke United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Mary Tulluck Fund at Saint Luke United Methodist Church, 2916 Wicker Street, Sanford, NC 27330 or to the charity of one’s choice.
