Carolyn Louise Cooper

Carolyn Louise Cooper (February 2, 1937- July 11, 2016 ) 79 of Sanford died at her home.  She was the daughter of Ruth Geneva Shackelford Cooper and Olin Vernon Cooper of Horry County (Conway), SC.  She was the sister of BV Cooper (Shirley) of Chapel Hill, NC.

She graduated from Furman University with a major in French.  For 27 years, she was a teacher in private and public schools in SC and NC.

Carolyn was a life-long learner.  She read voraciously and some of her most satisfying moments came when she was engaged in learning and reading.  She loved Furman University and often said that those four years were among the happiest in her life.

She enjoyed her time as a teacher, spending time investing in the minds, hearts and souls of her students.  She loved teaching French because as she said, the French language embodies more than just language. One must know a language’s culture: the food, the literature, the music, the art and the history, in order to truly know the language.  She taught the whole language and the whole child. Teaching was her métier.

Throughout Carolyn’s life, she exhibited the highest standards: integrity, honesty, respect, honor and most importantly, a true and deep devotion to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Although she endured hardships in this life, she never lost faith that one day, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4.

She had five children:  Blair Kendall Ivey, Paul Eric Ivey, Starr Adair Ivey, Paige Lenore Ivey and Anne Amoret Ivey Slough (Brett).  Three grandchildren: Angel Ivey, Cooper and Sean Slough. Her greatest desire was for her children and grandchildren to be healthy and happy and “good” people. The greatest compliment she could give someone was that they were a “good” person.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to CARA (Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption), PO Box 2642, Sanford, NC 27331.

Interment will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens, Charleston, SC, Saturday at 4:00pm.

In March a friend and I were wondering "you think she still has her cat?" as we reminisce on our time in French class in high school. Just a few weeks ago I was telling my French friend about the only teacher I have always kept in my heart and the influence she had on me, Mme Cooper. It brings tears to know of her passing. I remember spending my afternoons after class at Lee Senior talking to her about France, her youth, her children, and Maurice. Even though (and I regret) not continuing learning French in college, she install in me the curiosity and love for the language, culture, and people that still persist in me. I know that in part, if it had not been for her I don't think I would have become the individual or be where I am today. I will always remember the sparkle in your eyes when you spoke about your time in France. I hope that when I finally make it to The City of Lights, I to, can experience the joy it brought you and you shared with me. You are miss.

I have kept the papers that Ms. Cooper insisted on using in place of new text books long past their use. I know that should I want to study French again, it would be hard to find anything better. And Ms. Cooper knew that too. I valued the obvious love she had for the subject she taught and the respect she showed to us students as we worked to get it right. My condolences to her family.

I had the pleasure of first meeting Ms. Cooper when Pepper "escaped" and happened upon my yard. When I was informed as to which house he belonged, I carried him home. She was so relieved to have him returned. I sat on the back patio area and spoke with her for a while. She was such a sweet lady with only kindness in her voice. After that meeting, when I saw her out at the grocery store, etc. she would greet me with a smile. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
