Billy Wayne Dowdy

Billy Wayne Dowdy, 89 of Cary passed away Friday October 11, 2024. Funeral services will be held at 11am Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Cary. A graveside service will follow at 3pm at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford.

Mr. Dowdy was born in Lee Co. son of the late June W. Dowdy and Kate Oldham Dowdy. He was preceded in death by sisters, Junie Dowdy and Geraldine Wenger. Billy was a Veteran of the US Navy serving in Guam and Japan, a graduate of Sanford Central High School, and Auto & Deisel Mechanic School in Nashville. He worked with the NC Highway Patrol as a auto and helicopter mechanic retiring as a Shop Foreman after 30 years.

Mr. Dowdy was an active member of First Baptist Church in Cary for 55 years serving on several committees and most often would be found preparing meals at Church, Mission Trips and at Disaster Relief efforts. He enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states and 17 European countries. His favorite pastime was fishing trips at the Outer Banks with his buddies. 

Mr. Dowdy is survived by his wife, Glenda Morrison Dowdy; nephew, Vince Wenger; niece Debby Goodman (Phil) and their daughter, Carey; great niece Logan Gillespie (Blaine); great nephew, Christian Wenger; sister-in-law, Bettie Jones and her son Steven Thomas; nephew Gary Morrison (Kelli) and their daughter Macy and son Jake.

The family will greet friends beginning at 10 am Wednesday prior to the service.
