Alma Gayle Adcock
November 4, 1949 – July 8, 2025
Alma Gayle Adcock, 75, passed away on July 8, 2025.
Gayle was born in Durham, North Carolina to the late Jack Adcock and Martha Bowling Adcock. She was a talented fiction writer, achieving an MFA from the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop and was one of the youngest writers to be published in Fiction magazine. Though she stopped writing once she started a family, her creative spark never faded, constantly creating funny characters and stories to amuse her children. She was also never without a hilarious quip or a wry observation.
Gayle lived in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Houston before returning to North Carolina where she has lived for the past twenty-six years.
From a restaurant business family, she was an excellent cook and loved gardening, crime/murder mysteries, movies, and Southern Gothic literature. She passed all these loves, including her gift for writing and irreverent sense of humor to her daughter, Alma Drake Hulin.
Gayle devoted many years to the care of, and was a fierce advocate for her autistic son, Nathan Wilkerson Linder.
She’ll always be remembered as funny, feisty, and resilient. She is survived by her two children.
