Welcome to the memorial page for

Carolyn Moore

May 8, 1917 ~ June 14, 2017 (age 100)

Carolyn C. Moore of Sanford passed away June 14, 2017 at the age of 100. Born and raised on Long Island, NY, she was in the first graduating class of Hofstra University in 1939 and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Social Work at University of Buffalo. Joining the League of Women Voters in Fargo, ND, she was active in local affairs and voter registration. She helped introduce the newly invented voting machines to the public. After moving to Chardon, OH, she became a driving force behind cleaning up water pollution in Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River. Her minute of fame came when she was interviewed for a special report about pollution on CBS News with Walter Cronkite in 1966.

Carolyn attributed her longevity to her philosophy “Life is short, eat dessert first”, especially if it was chocolate. She and Howard T. Moore were married in 1949 and had 62 years together before his death in 2011. They both loved cross-country skiing, golf, gardening, and the variety of cats and dogs over the years. Her favorite dogs were the Shetland Sheep dogs, all named Dolly.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister.

Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Moore Gillen of Hendersonville, NC; son Alan Thomas Moore of Sanford; grandchildren, Colin Gillen of Pittsburg, PA and Margaret DelQuadro (Michael) of Las Vegas, NV; great grandchild, Abigail DelQuadro.
